Meditation on Mitzvot

Posted on: November 18th, 2018 by Alden

A meditation on bringing holiness into the world through mitzvot. Prayer and Torah are the path. This piece will appear in my forthcoming book, This Joyous Soul: A New Voice for Ancient Yearnings, from CCAR Press.

Meditation on Mitzvot
It’s simple, really,
This list of things we do,
As a people,
This list of things I do,
To live in a good way,
For others and myself,
To leave a legacy of love,
To leave the world
Just a little better each day.

A kind word.
A gentle hand.
A loving voice.
A giving heart.

It’s not so simple, really,
To remember to live this way.
Always.
So we arrive early to study Torah
And strive for devotion in prayer,
To remember to honor all beings
With compassion and understanding,
Living a life of mitzvot in joy and service,
So that Torah will resound from our hearts,
Through our words and deeds,
Into the world,
And into the generations to come.

Devarim 5775: Teachers of Israel

Posted on: July 22nd, 2015 by Alden

480px-Rembrandt_-_Moses_with_the_Ten_Commandments_-_Google_Art_ProjectWe begin the final book of Torah this week with Parashat Devarim, detailing the last weeks in the life of Moses, in which he shifts from great leader to the first teacher of Torah. He becomes, in earnest, Moshe Rabeinu, Moses our teacher. This is a prayer for pure and humble hearts for today’s teachers of Torah.

Teachers of Israel
Teachers of Israel,
Keep your Torah humble
And your hearts pure.
Keep joy before your eyes
And gratitude before your heart.
Know this day that your wisdom
Is a gift from heaven.
Your knowledge is a tribute
To your Maker.
Then, your teaching will become
An offering of service
To the G-d of our people.

Teachers of Israel,
Keep your Torah pure
And your hearts humble.
Keep righteousness before your eyes
And understanding before your heart.
Teach in the fullness of joy.

To Praise, not to be praised.
To Bless, not to be blessed.
To Glorify, not to be glorified.
To Extol, not to be extolled.
To Sanctify, not to be sanctified.

So that your wisdom blesses the world,
Blesses the nations,
And blesses the people Israel.

Gravity and Light

Posted on: November 23rd, 2014 by Alden

Shabbat Shira, The BayitDuring a short walk from “The Bayit” to the dining hall on a crisp fall morning at OSRUI’s Shabbat Shira retreat, my friend Michael said: “Torah is gravity.” He paused to let me soak it in. I thought for a moment, then said, “I may borrow that line.” A few days later, I wrote this meditation on Torah and mitzvot.

Gravity and Light
Torah is gravity,
Binding us to our ancestors,
Holding us near to our G-d,
Anchoring us with wisdom and understanding.
Torah is gravity,
Tying our lives
To our history and our destiny.

Mitzvot are light,
Illuminating our path,
Brightening our days,
Showing us the way to holiness and service,
Leading us to heal the world.
Mitzvot are light,
Shining around us,
With beauty.

Torah is gravity.
May your feet never falter.
Mitzvot are light.
May your hands shine with grace.

Blessed are G-d’s gifts.

Postscript: Shabbat Shira was an amazing “reboot” to my creativity. I wrote many new pieces there, including “Sephardi Quarter Note,” and began several others. My friend Rabbi Larry Carol and I wrote a song together called “Only Now.” Here’s a link to his blog post about it. In the coming weeks I’ll post additional prayers written because of that amazing event. Shabbat Shira 2015 is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 22-25.

The Open Space

Posted on: March 3rd, 2013 by tobendlight

pillar_03 wwuThis is a meditation about opening the spiritual space for wholeness to enter. It is, of course, in the voice of the spiritual traveler, the one who hints at wisdom and loves the journey for its own sake. This prayer/poem will appear in my forthcoming book, Song of the Spiritual Traveler.

The Open Space

Wholeness is the open space,

The place between,

Where the rhythm of being

Enters, flows through,

In my vision and my courage.

Forgiveness is the open space,

Where yesterday meets tomorrow,

Where the tide waits to shift,

Where holiness blesses the mundane,

In my breath and my celebration.

Wisdom is the open space

Where the echo hears the wind,

Where the silence becomes G-d’s Voice,

Where all that I am meets all that I can be,

In my marrow and in my surrender.
