Rainbow of Genders

Posted on: June 1st, 2021 by Alden

A new prayer as we enter Pride Month. The idea for this one-liner came to me while praying the Nisim b’Chol Yom, prayers of gratitude for daily blessings. I wrote the initial English and Hebrew, checking the words in both languages with three clergy whom I admire and know to be sensitive to language: Cantor Evan Kent, Rabbi Myra Hovav, and Rabbi Denise Eger, editor of Mishkan Ga’avah: Where Pride Dwells. The Hebrew went through several iterations, which fed back into the English version. Creating this one line in both English and Hebrew took one liturgist, one cantor, two rabbis, and a 26-message email chain.

Rainbow of Genders

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who in goodness created rainbows of genders and orientations.

.ברוך אתה ה’ אלוהינו מלך העולם אשר ברא בטובו קשתות מגדרים ונטייות

Baruch ata Adonai eloheinu melech haolam asher barah b’tuvo keshetot m’gadrim u’netiyot.
