Jewish Prayers From the Heart and Pen of Alden Solovy

Sweet Cake

Honey CakeThis is another song of the spiritual traveler, an extended metaphor that shimmers with hope and prayer. It’s more of a yearning than a classic prayer, a love poem about life. And yet, aren’t all yearnings simply silent prayers of the heart? One of my favorite pieces that’s written in the voice of the spiritual traveler is called “Come Walk.”

Sweet Cake
Give me a drop of honey,
And I will give you the harvest moon.
Give me a silent tear,
And I will give you the roaring sea.
Give me a cup of milk,
And I will give you the rising sun.
Give me your secret prayer,
And I will give you my broken heart.

Give me a drop of honey and we will
Make a feast of this life.
Sweet cake,
To feed ourselves with joy and love.
Sweet cake,
To feed the world with awe and wonder.
Sweet cake,
Of milk and honey.
Sweet cake,
Of prayers and tears.

Give me all of your broken pieces
And I will stick them back together with raw unfiltered honey
I will bathe your sorrows in wellsprings of sweetness

Give me pools of your salty tears
And I will give you oceans of tenderness

Give me your most sincere hopes and your wildest dreams
And I will carry them over the moon and sprinkle them with stardust

Give me your most intimate prayers
And I will bury them deep in my heart

I am not afraid of your woundedness
I am not deterred by your barricades
I will not turn away from the hard stuff
I will not back down from gut-wrenching honesty

I am here for the long haul
I am here for the nitty gritty
I am here for the blood, and the sweat, and your writhing body
    Riddled with despair and woe
    Beyond belief

I am here for the mess
    And the mystery

I am the driver and the driven
I will take you where you lead
    Follow me
    Into your wilderness
Together we will find our way

Wander through the muck and the mire
    With me

    Give me your best shot
I will not be here forever
But for however long I’m here
    I’m all in
