Prayer of Joy

Posted on: March 19th, 2017 by Alden

joy-with-white-backgroundThis is a prayer of gratitude for joy, with a reminder to live joy as a daily spiritual practice. It’s a meditation for daily use when time is brief. It’s in my new book This Grateful Heart: Psalms and Prayers for a New Day from CCAR Press.

Prayer of Joy
G-d,
Thank You for joy and delight,
For wonder and awe,
For moments of gladness and celebration.
Grant me the ability to breathe gentleness
Into my hours and seasons,
So that I live awake to beauty,
To holiness,
To the radiance that surrounds us.
Grant me the wisdom to arrive each day
With passion and humor,
With song and dance,
With smiling eyes,
In service to myself,
In service to others,
In service to Your Holy Name.

Simple Prayer for Healing, Revised

Posted on: July 27th, 2014 by Alden

800px-Brilliant_red_sunset_reflecting_off_the_frozen_tundra_-_NOAAThis prayer is basic, direct, to the point. Heal and comfort those in need. And heal the world of suffering and strife. It’s a prayer for moments when less is more.  Like now. This will appear in my forthcoming book, Prayers for Healing the World. I added the third stanza this morning.

Simple Prayer for Healing, Revised
G-d, grant Your healing power
To all in need,
Those of whom I know,
______________ [list names]
And those unknown to me.

G-d, grant Your comfort and consolation
To all who grieve,
Those of whom I know,
______________ [list names]
And those unknown to me.

Holy One,
Bring a swift end to suffering and strife,
And the heal the world
With Your steadfast love.

Blessed are You, Adonai our G-d,
Ruler of the universe,
Who lifts up the fallen.

Postscript: The war touches everything here. Which is why I added the third stanza. Here are prayers for “R’fuat HaNefesh” and “For Healing the Spirit.” Please check out my new book, Jewish Prayers of Hope and Healing.

Quick Blessing for a Friend’s Departure

Posted on: July 18th, 2013 by tobendlight

Friendship-Quotes-4What can I say when a friend departs? When his journey moves on? When her path and mine diverge? For me, these moments are rich with history and love, but they need few words. So here’s a quick blessing to give to a friend when your lives move apart. This will appear in my forthcoming book, Jewish Prayers of Hope and Healing.

Quick Blessing for a Friend’s Departure
Heart of my heart,
Dear [brother/sister/friend],
Bless you on your journey.
May you find what you seek
And what you need,
What seeks you
And what calls you home.
May the light of health and hope
Carry you toward beauty and wonder.
May the light of holiness
Carry you toward strength and service.
Let peace and joy surround your days.
And let awe and thanksgiving
Lead you on a path of virtue.

Quick Prayer on Waking

Posted on: July 11th, 2013 by tobendlight

Yellow_sunriseThis brief prayer borrows its intention and theology from modeh ami, the traditional Jewish prayer said immediately on waking up in the morning, echoes of which are heard in the second stanza. The prayer is another in my series of quick prayers. Here’s a related set of prayers called “Morning Blessings.”

Quick Prayer on Waking
G-d,
Grant me a gentle day,
A kind and a sweet day,
A day of light and breath,
A day of love and service.

Holy One,
Thank You for renewing me to life.
For restoring my soul to my body
And for returning me
In joy and gratitude
To Your gifts and blessings.
