Source of Bread

Posted on: September 13th, 2020 by Alden

A meditation on physical and spiritual sustenance, and the power of blessing to summon a connection to the divine.

Source of Bread
What is bread
Without a blessing?
It feeds the body
But not the soul.
Let sustenance lead me
To You.

What is water
Without a blessing?
It quenches the thirst
But not the yearning.
Let sustenance lead me
To You.

Let life flow with bread and water,
With milk and honey,
With bounty and plenty for all.
Let no one go hungry,
Not for food,
Not for You
Source of life,
Not for You
Source of all.

Show Me

Posted on: July 24th, 2019 by Alden

What does G-d want from us? Our service to Torah, mitzvot and tikun olam. These actions are a source of holiness and love. Thank you to Joanne Fink and Zenspirations for use of the illustration.

Show Me
Show me the works of your hands
And the deeds of your heart
And I will cause holiness
To pass through you
Like the wind through the trees
Summoning your soul
To mingle with Mine.

Set your mind to all
That is kind and just,
Compassionate and good.

Set your hand to all
That is right and true,
Charitable and healing.

Incline your heart to all
That is righteous and holy,
Glorious and full of wonder.

One Gift

Posted on: September 19th, 2014 by Alden

IMG_8211Each moment brings a new gift, the gift of now. Now is the source of all gifts. G-d is the Source of now. Here are three related meditations: “Leaving,” “Arriving” and “Now.”

One Gift
There is but one gift
That is the source of all blessings:
The gift of now.
Now is the source
Of you, my friend,
Of us, my love,
Of sky and rain,
Of thunder and light,
Of season and harvest,
Of mystery and adventure,
Of awe and wonder.
Now is the source of blessings.

There is but one Source
For this well of blessings
This flow of now:
You, G-d of All Being.
You are the Source
Of friendship and love,
Of tide and bounty,
Of endings and beginnings,
Of Torah and wisdom,
Of radiance and splendor,
Of holiness and healing.
You, Holy One, are the
Source of all gifts, the
Source of all blessings, the
Source of now.

Praise the New Day

Posted on: August 5th, 2013 by tobendlight

My Glimpses of GloryHere’s another prayer of praise for G-d, with the added hope and desire to be of service to G-d’s world. My other prayers of praise include “Dance Hallelujah,” “Sing Hallelujah” and “Sing Out.” This prayer will appear in my forthcoming book, Jewish Prayers of Hope and Healing.

Praise the New Day
Praise the new day,
A gift of the Source of All Being,
The Breath of Life,
The Soul of the Universe.
Cherish the moments
And sanctify the hours.
Bless the joys
And honor the tears.
Lift your heart in song.
Raise your voice in thanksgiving.
Magnify your faith.
Practice acceptance.
Offer consolation.
Seek wisdom.
Become a well of healing,
A beacon of kindness,
A source of forgiveness,
A light of wonder and wisdom.

Soul of the Universe,
Breath of Life,
Source of All Being,
We praise the new day.
A gift of holiness and love.

Breisheit: For Creation

Posted on: October 8th, 2012 by tobendlight

Park TimnaThis is a simple prayer to remember the majesty of G-d’s creation. It’s the first of a series of prayers and poems tied to the parasha of the week. Some, like this one, will be repostings because the particular piece fits with the Torah reading. Others will be new pieces. To listen as you read, click on the triangle in the bar below. The text follows. This piece appears in This Grateful Heart: Psalms and Prayers for a New Day from CCAR Press.

For Creation
Author of life,
Architect of creation,
Artist of earth,
Your works declare Your Holy Name.

Mighty rivers,
Turbulent seas,
Towering mountains,
Rolling hills,
Vast spaces of brilliance and grandeur.

You created pallet and paint,
Color and hue,
Shape and form,
Abundant and beautiful,
Glorious and majestic,
Full of mystery and wonder.

Blessed are You,
With divine love You created a world of splendor.
